"We are cups, constantly and quietly being filled. The trick is, knowing how to tip ourselves over and let the beautiful stuff out."
Ray Bradbury, on writing

Writing is one of the most important components of our homeschool. I want my children to enjoy their journaling, narrations and compositions, and in my experience the feel of one's notebooks contributes to the overall appeal, or lack thereof, of the work at hand. The standard, black and white marbled covers of their history, science and language arts notebooks not only threatened to make dull work out of a task that should be meaningful and pleasant, but also threatened to trigger one of my migraines. I covered them up with bits from my fabric stash: hers are covered in a petite Japanese print, his are covered with a bold graphic Ikea print. Their notebooks are now personalized, soft, comforting, ready to receive.

I was thinking of doing something similar bc I have a strong dislike of the whole black and white marble mania

um, love, love, love this. Especially the reminder about having our children love the journaling process, since mine is grumbling and I am barking at him about this very thing. Right now. Ahem.

Seriously though, when my machine is back in business, I am going to make these for our awful black and white marbled notebooks too.

Very pretty. Love the initialling too.

I remember in high school starting each new year with a crisp set of empty notebooks - filled only with yet unwritten potential. How I covered those books set the tone for the enthusiasm I felt for the subject during the year!

These are so fresh - did you make the pattern up yourself?

This is such a great way to personalize the presentation of the student's writing. Even students who use loose sheets of paper to write and then gather them in a three ring or loose notebook can benefit from this idea.

The more the student feels the writing reflects "them" - their interests, tastes, values - the stronger their writing becomes and the more it reflects their own voice.

I have encouraged my student's to use Word Art to develop the front of their three ring notebooks to slide into the slip-cover. I think my daughter in particular will prefer this idea of a soft touch, with her choice of colors. Thanks for the idea.
